Strolling in Pinocchio’s park
by Sandra Massai Fallaci, ph. Alessandro Gambinossi
Pictures, history and literature all merge into one in the Park of Collodi, capturing the visitor’s attention and emotions: it’s a treasure chest of combined elements giving poetic and vibrant sensations, a journey into a writer’s world, Carlo Lorenzini who chose his birthplace as a penname. He did choose poetic language but strongly bound to reality. The installations are works by prestigious artists who won the competition held in ’53. Distinguished names were in the judging panel such as Giacomo Manzù and Giovanni Michelucci. Walking in the garden, core moments of the story are retraced: the puppet’s encounter with the Cat and the Fox, the Blue Fairy, with the other puppets, with Geppetto in the whales’s belly… This way, the visitor comes into direct contact with the main events of the story, from the carpenter’s workshop to the protagonist’s final redemption. Once he has become “human”, he gains his true self, his true identity. Lorenzini had an ontological itinerary in mind, fathoming lights and shadows of the inner life and of our existence. Pinocchio’s growth journey is basically that of each one of us, his mistakes, contradictions and uncertainties are also ours. Of course, he’s a bit of a liar…but who isn’t sometimes? And anyway, Pinocchio’s nose only grows when the lie is not for a good cause. Instead, it does not grow at all for the so-called “white lies”, proving how many complex elements live together in the human soul which is like a labyrinth and, precisely, there is a labyrinth among the works. Lorenzini aka Collodi, observes all this quite severely but also understandingly. A brilliant book, appreciated by all, whatever the age. It is a kind of life-skills novel, where the lead character reaches his personal fulfilment by slowly evolving. He becomes an adult when he is able to think with his own head. A message which has arrived everywhere in the world having been translated in over 240 languages. This precious written work offers various levels of interpretation, something that occurs in all important novels, thus it can be read many times in life, each time finding something different with respect to the previous reading. This certainly happens because as we grow, we are the ones who change and develop new faculties: but when a book is truly unique, reading it carefully you can find life, a kind of mine where to extract from. Pinocchio is part of this mine, which can be described as world heritage. A book where poetry and deep wisdom meet.
